Emerald Resort & Casino hosts the Million Dollar Pigeon Race

VANDERBIJLPARK. – From February 1 to 5 Emerald Resort & Casino will be hosting the 21st Million Dollar Pigeon Race with prize money close to US$2million. Over the years, more than 1 500 international entrants have taken part in this event from 35 different countries.
Entrants from all walks of life have the opportunity to pit their pigeons against each other across an equal playing field where every pigeon is treated in exactly the same manner. These include ex majors, Senior State Advocates, doctors and CEO’s from a variety of fields as well as many noble houses from the Middle East. Her Majesty, the Queen of England is also entering the race on behalf of charity organisations both locally and in the United Kingdom.
“The legendary race week is packed with events and activities,” says Emerald Resort & Casino’s Marketing Executive, Tanuja Gangabishun. “From river cruises to a friendly round of golf hosted at Heron Banks Golf and River Estate and a fishing competition hosted by pigeon trainer Willi van Beers, to a traditional South African braai at the bush Boma.”
Saturday, 4 February is race day where pigeon fanciers from all over the world will converge to watch all the action at the lofts which will be projected onto the big screen at the Emerald Arena (previously referred to as the E&E Centre). The following day sees the auction of the top 50 pigeons in the E&E Centre. Last year’s winning pigeon sold for a staggering $100 010.00 on iPigeon.com. The biggest benefit to the auction is that South African pigeon fanciers can purchase the best pigeons in the world, thereby improving the gene pool of local pigeons.
“We look forward to hosting the best of local and international pigeon fanciers,” concludes Gangabishun. “Always be on the lookout for the unexpected adventure at Emerald Resort & Casino.”
