VANDEBIJLPARK.- A hostage situation apparently caused by a love triangle took place on Wednesday at the Local Economic Development (LED) offices of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM.
An armed Fidelity employee allegedly stormed the LED offices. The furious guard apparently fired about three shots as he looked for his girlfriend/lover, who had been tipped off that he was coming and left the premises. The Vaal Gate Shopping Centre came to a standstill. Centre customers had the shock of their lives when they were evacuated by Police. Emergency personnel and negotiators were deployed to the scene, trying everything to control the situation.
All stores were obliged to close. It took about two hours for police and negotiators to pursuade the suspect to discard his fire arm. It took about four hours to bring the suspect to book. Rumours went viral on social media that the lover “was having an affair with someone at the LED office”. The guard’s anger boiled over when he took his service weapon with him and marched to the LED offices.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale confirms that the suspect is faced with two charges – intimidation, and discharging of a firearm. She further reported that the reason for the crisis was a love triangle.
“The suspect has appeared at Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court,” said Makhale.
ELM Acting Head of Communication Stanley Gaba, when asked about the matter, referred to it as a criminal case that needed police intervention. He confirmed that the matter happened at the municipal offices but that he could not speculate about the reason for the drama as he has was told that it was a criminal case.
