SASOLBURG. – All across the globe, parkrun events for runners of all standards are gaining momentum.

It is safe to say that millions of people are now taking part in these world-wide fun activities – come rain or shine!

This healthy way of getting some exercise in the outdoors also found its way to the Vaal Triangle where hundreds of people flock to Heron Banks Golf and River Estate in Vaalpark on Saturday mornings to take part in a 5 kilometer timed run which can be whatever you want it to be, whether for fun or as part of a training plan.

You do not need to be a member of a certain medical aid fund to participate.

Local organiser Russell Bevis says anyone older than four can register and partake in parkrun events. The run starts at 08:00 each Saturday.

“We currently have over 6 900 different runners registered with Heron Banks parkrun as their homerun, with a weekly average attendance of 440 runners,” he says.

You do not have to attend every week. While there is a parkrun every Saturday morning, you are free to decide which Saturdays you would like to attend and there are absolutely no costs involved.

Participants are only required to register once online via the following link: https://www.parkrun.co.za/register/

Thereafter, once registered, participants must bring along a printed copy of their personal barcode.

Dogs are allowed at Heron Banks parkrun but only one dog per runner and dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times.
