R22.7 million later Boipatong Library lies in tatters

Paul Willemburg MPL – DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, writes:
Gauteng MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Faith Mazibuko, indicated that her department has spent over R22 753 000 on the Boipatong Library, however upon visiting the library during the DA’s Library Campaign, it is clear that someone has done a bunk with the cash and left residents with a dilapidated shell.
The historic Boipatong Township in the Sedibeng region of Gauteng is one of the most neglected areas of the province – despite its historical stature. A new beginning for Boipatong under the DA is needed.
The purpose of the DA’s visit to the library was to establish what services the library is rendering to residents of the community, what challenges the library staff may face and how the DA can take these issues forward to ensure that the library is fully functional and a hub of knowledge for Boipatong residents.
Upon arrival at the library, it was already evident that the money MEC Mazibuko claims had been spent had never seen the light of day.
The library is housed in a small, outdated building which was locked and inaccessible. A resident that we spoke to said that the facility had been closed for over a year and that very little has happened since its doors were shut.
A look inside the building revealed empty shelves, books scattered across the floor and light fittings dangling dangerously from the ceiling. Residents indicated that they have to travel to Vereeniging Library if they are to make use of library services.
This situation is unacceptable and is an indictment on this ANC administration who have no intention of improving the quality of life for residents in townships.
The DA will be writing to MEC Mazibuko to request a breakdown of where the R22.7 million has gone on “upgrading” the Boipatong library – as it is quite clear that residents have been fleeced of their money.
