What sayeth the Lord about courtship?

Pastor TL Mashiloane

Courtship is a method of introduction and carrying out of a pre-marital relationship between a single man and a single woman. Courtship is conducted under the authority of the men’s and woman’s families and the Church. The single man and woman enter into courtship because they have an intention to get married to one another at the end of the courtship process.

The purpose and objective of this article is to help Christians to engage in courtship in a biblical way, in which God is honoured and glorified.According to Song of Solomon 8:4, those engaged in Courtship will definitely honour God if they do not arouse or awaken love before the right time, which is marriage. If the prospective couple can succeed in remaining pure; and should things not work, none of them will be left with heartache. According to 1 Corinthians 6:18, sexual immorality is a sin, not only against God but also against our own bodies.

There are other sins which parties engaged in Courtship need to be aware of. One of these sins is the sin of idolatry. Idolatry in courtship happens when one of the parties say or believe that the other is “everything to them” or the most important things in their lives. In the book of Matthew 10:37, Jesus states it very clearly that anyone who loves another person more than Him is not worthy of Him.

Scripture:
Song of Solomon 8:4 (NIV)
“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires”.

Advise:
Parties to Courtship ought to remember that they are not married until they are married. I therefore advise that all sexual activities (including kissing) be reserved for marriage. I also advise prospective couples to study the Word of God and to prayer together during the courtship period in order for them to grow in the love and knowledge of Christ, and to plead with Him to conform their minds and wills to His.

Prayer:
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I pray that you may help your children to control their natural urges and impulses and to live a life of holiness. May they go through their courtship process in a manner that pleases and glorifies you. Amen.
