VEREENIGING.- The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on Monday, lodged an appeal against the Pretoria High Court ruling on Hoërskool Overvaal’s decision which was delivered last month. The department is appealing a ruling in the North Gauteng High Court which prohibited the placement of 55 English-speaking pupils at the Afrikaans high school in Vereeniging.
The school and the GDE have been involved in a court battle, with the school insisting it cannot admit the pupils because it lacks capacity and resources. Political parties, in particular the EFF, the ANC and its affiliates said the school was racist. Violence broke out several times during demonstrations staged following the judgment and many protesters were arrested and released on warning. The date for the appeal is still to be set.
