VANDERBIJLPARK. – The annual Moths Border Boys Parade will be held on Saturday May 19 at the Sylviavale Heritage Museum, Vaal Drive, Sylviavale, behind Ocumed Eye Hospital. The event will start at 10:30 and run until 11:00.
The parade is organised by the Moths of Sandy Shellhole for the Military, the Police and other service veterans, and all those who served South Africa in the line of duty.
“We are making an appeal through Vaalweekblad and Vaal Ster, and sister publications that cover the area from Parys, Vredefort, Sasolburg, Heilbron, Villiers, Heidelberg, Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Meyerton, Henley on Klip, Walkerville, Carletonville and Fochville to spread the news that we are seeking to contact all veterans, and especially World War 2 Veterans, to invite them to attend the parade that honours the men and women who served South Africa.
“We will be asking the WW2 Veterans, as our special Guests of Honour, to unveil the restored WW2 Vickers 3.7 inch Heavy Anti-Aircraft Gun, the 60 inch Sperry Searchlight of 800 million foot candlelight power and the additional 40mm Bofors Anti-Aircraft Gun on display at the Museum,” is the organiser’s message.
All Veterans who served from the 1940s to the late 1960s may remember these heavy equipment units. Members of all Service Organisations are encouraged to attend in their organisation’s Parade Dress uniform, with full medals and decorations and unit headgear if possible. Members of the public and families of deceased veterans are very welcome to attend, and are most welcome to lay a wreath to honour their family members.
There will be refreshments served afterwards, and for those who would like to stay on till later in the day, there will be a social bring-and-braai, where veterans and their families can socialise. A number of braai packs will be on sale for those who forgot to bring.World War 2 veterans and other service organisations and private members of the public who are National Service Veterans are requested to please contact the Moth Executive members of the Sandy Shellhole for further information.
