SEBOKENG. – Land invasion and the invasion of incomplete RDP houses are one and the same thing. The construction of RDP houses in Zone 19 has been suspended due to invasions.

The houses under construction are situated on the edge of the Golden highway. They have already been marked for occupation upon completion by invaders. The Emfuleni Local Municipality’s MMC for Housing, Edwin Kele, said that these illegal invaders are aligned with various political parties.
It is alleged that some groups are ‘fuelled’ by former councillors who have issues with the municipality. “An investigative team is probing the situation and a number of suspects have been identified. According to the law, the true owners of the houses are those who are registered on our lists.” Kele adds that those thinking of freely invading the houses are fooling themselves as they will be kicked out.
“A few years ago some of the alleged supporters of the Economic Freedom Front (EFF) members illegally occupied houses in the same area. To date nothing has been done. While we were thinking that soon we going to have a roof over our heads, suddenly other people occupy the house again,” said a resident. Kele said there are hundreds of people on the waiting list. “Every resident has to follow the correct procedure to receive a house,” said Kele. When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene, it discovered numerous illegal invaders marking the incomplete houses they intended to occupy.
