THREE RIVERS. –  Vereeniging police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda has urged residents to activate their alarms when they go to sleep and further ensure that they have installed additional security around their premises such as burglar doors.

This is after an elderly couple from Three Rivers sustained serious injuries after fighting off an attacker who had entered their home in the early hours of Sunday morning. “At around 4:30 in the morning,  The elderly man woke up after hearing his dogs barking. He met an unknown intruder in the passage of his home and  a struggle between the two of them ensued.

Funda adds that the man’s wife woke up with the intention of going to handover a gun to her husband. “The intruder  let go of the husband and went for the wife, during this time he was able to take the gun from her . When he could not use the gun, he tried to flee but the two elderly people woke up their son in-law  and asked him to help them as they were being attacked.

“Their son in-law managed to catch the suspect who had also sustained serious injuries.  He is in hospital under police guard. As soon as he is discharged he will be taken to police cells as he has to appear in court to answer to a house robbery charge.  The couple has also been treated as they sustained serious bite wounds.”
