VEREENIGING. – One suspect briefly appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s court on May 14 and was released on R20 000 bail until May 22 while his accomplice walked free. This comes after an estimated R800 000 worth of illegal cigarettes was seized in Arcon Park by a combination of law enforcement agencies including the Emfuleni By-law traffic police on May 11.
Magistrate Noble, before whom the suspect appeared, said the docket would be sent for consideration by the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) which will conduct further investigations. The arrest took place after the police received a tip-off from members of the public regarding alleged trafficking of boxes of illegal cigarettes and drugs.
Police Cluster Commander Colonel Mncedise Mabala said they received a positive tip-off from the neighbours. On arrival Police found about seven people, including a minor and three domestic workers in the house.
Some of the cartons of cigarettes and drug tablets had been stuffed into a wardrobe. A thorough police search of the property then took place and an undisclosed amount of cash was found in possession of one of the suspects. This was also confiscated.
Police loaded hundreds of boxes of alleged illegal cigarettes in their bakkie out of the double garage and wardrobe at the Arcon Park property. The case is being investigated further.
