Emfuleni Mayor withdraws his ‘resignation’

ELM Executive Mayor Jacob Khawe has ordered that contracts with the municipality be revisited.

Has Emfuleni’s Mayor, Councillor Jacob Khawe, resigned or was it a false rumour? After a week of intense specualtion, Mr. Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni’s Communications Manager sent this media release to Sedibeng Ster today (June 8, 2018):
It‘s all hands on deck as Mayor Khawe teams up with provincial officials to accelerate service deliver in Emfuleni.

In pursuit of stability and improvement of service delivery in Emfuleni, the Executive Mayor, Councillor Jacob Khawe has decided to put the residents of the municipality first, by withdrawing his intention to resign.

The Mayor’s reassuring commitment to the municipality follows weeks of speculation about his future in Emfuleni. Upon his return from official visits outside the country, the Mayor announced his readiness and willingness to continue the work of turning them municipality around.

Following a decision of the Gauteng province to intervene and assist the municipality in meeting its service delivery obligations to residents, the Mayor, members of the mayoral committee and the senior management team will now all join hands with officials from the province to strengthen and implement the municipality’s turn-around plans.

All municipal operations and activities, from the administration to service delivery departments remain active and the municipality apologizes for the confusion, anxiety and speculation which inconvenienced residents in recent weeks.
