BOIPATONG. – Gideon Bongani Buthelezi successfully defended his IBO junior bantamweight title when he beat Lucas Emmanuel Fernqandes Leone of Argentina at the international Conventiona Center in East London over the weekend.

This Boipatong-born boxer scored a unanimous 12-round points victory which saw him retaining his title. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Buthelezi described this victory as a memorable one for his boxing career. It was the fourth defence of his IBO junior bantamweight title.

Buthelezi is one of the local sports stars who have been featuring in Sedibeng Ster Sports pages since he was in amateur boxing. He was Sedibeng Ster Sports Star of The Year finalist five year ago alongside his homeboy Bongani “Dancing Rasta” Mahlangu, who is also a professional boxer.

“I’m very excited to retain my title and I’m confident that I will make history to keep this IBO bantamweight title and write history for myself. It wasn’t an easy fight though we came to the fight with a plan on how we were going to defeat him. But I must say – this was the toughest opponent for me and this is typical of Argentina’s boxers and how they fight. They are persistent, to say the least,” said Buthelezi.

The first to congratulate Buthelezi was Bongani Mahlangu who was full of praise for his close friend. The two grew up together in Boipatong as boxers.”I must say, I’m very happy for Gideon because he following on the foot-steps of local boxing greats such as Carlton “Swing Carlies” Monnakgotla, Shole “Tiger Floor” Mokoena, Shamba Mthimkhulu, Baby Lux Khambula and many others,” said Mahlangu
Buthelezi said he want to thank people for the support he received from Sedibeng boxing followers.
