SEDIBENG. – As is always the case on weekends I decided to drive around Evaton and ended up at the now defunct Blackpool FC dusty soccer grounds on Sunday. This is one of the legendary dusty soccer grounds alongside grounds such as Evaton Oceans Stars FC, Home Defenders, Evaton Real Sweepers and Holy Birds FC, to mention but a few.
I have fond memories of these places where local soccer fans used arrive in numbers to watch serious amateur football. Locals packed the venue to capacity and teams never disappointed.
Like TOUCHLINE said in the previous columns, this is the kind of football that soccer fans want to see every weekend. Some of the notable names that took part in this game was the former Jomo Cosmos darling Bongane Theletsane, who was among other players.
Those with a good memory will tell you that the very same dusty soccer ground used to host great soccer matches with Blackpool FC and later Bra Thoms Blackpool FC used to bury teams alive at the venue. Even though the grounds are next to the main road – Adams Road- no serious incidents were ever reported. No soccer fan was ever hit by a passing vehicle and no soccer ball ever hit the window of any car.
I was sitting there listening to soccer fans talking about how football used to make them forget their problems. I was also sitting there and one of the best memories of the venue was when Bra Thoms Blackpool played to a goalless draw with my former team Evaton Ocena Stars. It was an exciting game.
How can TOUCHLINE forget the great exciting game between Bra Thoms Blackpool against Rainbow Juventus at the same venue? Yours truly, TOUCHLINE, also had great memories at the venue while still at Botlehadi Primary School.
This was our venue and many schools would leave the venue with their tails between their legs.TOUCHLINE challenges the municipality to take good care of those above mentioned soccer grounds because they are part of our rich history.
