The families were removed from the now defunct New Village informal settlement and moved to this place, a place they came to call ‘Kampong’ three years ago. This was with the promise from the local and provincial housing authorities that their houses would be built soon after most of their neighbours moved into RDP houses nearby in 2011.

No houses, no votes!

The crowd came in two full buses that travelled from Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Zone 14. The memorandum was directed to SDM’s MMC of Housing and Development Planning, Madisebo Khomoeasera. An official from the office of the mayor received the memorandum on their behalf. Protesters carried placards that declared amongst other things, ‘No houses, no votes’.

Illegal invaders aligned to political parties

The houses under construction are situated on the edge of the Golden highway. They have already been marked for occupation upon completion by invaders.The Emfuleni Local Municipality’s MMC for Housing, Edwin Kele, said that these illegal invaders are aligned with various political parties.
