No fire permits to be issued in George for the next five months

The George Municipality will not issue any permits for controlled burns with immediate effect from 5 November, George Herald reports.

George Fire Chief Neels Barnard said the measure is part of summer fire season precautions and will apply until the end of March 2019, depending on the weather conditions and predictions at that time.

“Permits are usually issued until mid-November, but considering the current fire emergency situation no more permits will be issued by the George Fire Department with immediate effect,” said Barnard.

“The municipality appeals to all people who live, work and visit the area to exercise extreme caution at all times; to make fires in protected and designated areas only, and to dispose of cigarette butts safely. There is a long, hot summer ahead and we need everyone to help in keeping our region safe.”
